The Club approached us to re-envision the staid interiors of The Auckland Park Campus. Being conscious of the heritage of the existing building our design approach sought to integrate the proportions and motifs of the Art Deco and Edwardian building, modernizing and re-contextualizing them to express the narrative of Johannesburg. The design concept became a modern African interpretation of Art Deco playing on the geometries, patterns and proportions of both African and Art Deco design.

Symbolic elements of Johannesburg such as the city grid, mining machinery, and gold were subtly reinterpreted and informed the design of the gallery space, trophy wall, doorways and arches, screens, panelling and vaulted ceilings.

The plan was thoughtfully reorganized to facilitate ease of movement, visual connection to the new expanded dining area and increased natural light and ventilation. The design successfully doubled the seating capacity of the dining area and reconnected the interior to the Club’s generous grounds.
