MOD HOUSE

2019, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Our design approach was to reinterpret an existing 1930s modernist house, perched atop the Parkview ridge, into an open bright, timeless home adapted for a contemporary lifestyle. To achieve this, we exploited the original proportions and coupled this with a series of additions that respond to the existing structure thus creating a rich conversation between the old and the new.

The new additions do not blend into the existing but act as contemporary clip-ons to the modernist building. The house has been opened up to exploit multiple cross views between the southern courtyard and expansive views to the north. Steel-framed glass doors have been used to create intimate living spaces which can be opened to create larger spaces for entertaining. A number of sculptural concrete skylights have been strategically placed throughout the design to add a sense of volume and light to spaces of hierarchical importance.

The main house is connected to the pool area by means of a slender pavilion that sits south of a lengthy rim flow pool which terminates over the breath-taking views into the rolling green landscape of northern Johannesburg.
